Damon Bard is a sculptor, 3D modeler, and character designer with decades of work under his belt. He says it best himself on his web site: “For 28+ years now, Damon Bard has been working as a freelance artist in the entertainment industry primarily as a sculptor but also as a development artist and designer of characters and creatures. Since then, he has contributed to nearly 30 films and other various projects during his career. Damon has also been fortunate enough to have worked along side some of the most talented, acclaimed and awarded artists and directors in the industry and on a few of the most successful films ever made: Kung Fu Panda II, How To Train Your Dragon, Coraline, Kung Fu Panda, Ratatouille, Shrek 2, Star Wars: Episode 3, and Madagascar to name a few. Additionally, Damon works on his bronze figurative sculpture and oil paintings between and during projects as time allows.” A busy artist. His site also features a link to his demo reel, showing off some of his 3D digital works.

We met a lot of cool people at the CTN Animation Expo. (You probably noticed!) Another one to pay attention to: Randy Bishop, a freelance illustrator and character designer. Of both humans and very stylish furries, it should be noted. Recently Randy decided to get serious about his first self-created project called Monomyth. He imagined a world in which all the myths and legends of every culture live together in our world — and how that tends to complicate life for everyone. Another multi-talented artist we stumbled across. Huguette Pizzic is a character designer and illustrator with a distinctive swoopy, very fluid style of art.  (Woo, look at that: Otters that look made out of water!). Originally from France, she’s found work around the world in places like Scotland, Australia, and the USA. “If you’re not scared of silly monsters, tough cowboys, or puckish Chihuahuas, go and have a look at her portfolio!”

Christina Halstead is a character designer and, yes, animator who has worked freelance on projects for outfits like Toon Boom and games like Beast’s Fury. Her personal art web site is called Shadowed Brush Creations — there you can find sketches, character paintings, and even short animation samples from her work.

People Are Strange, When You’re A Vixen

According to Cartoon Brew, Yoyotoki is a young vixen who “…was raised with cell phones, computers, and all of the other gadgets and trappings of modern life, but her parents soon got tired of the rat race and decided to move to the countryside, where they encountered a tornado and found themselves in a strange land called Mytholopia, a beautiful world filled with waterfall farms, rainbow forests, and desert canyons.” So says Niki Yang, creator of Yoyotoki: Happy Ears!, a new proposed animated TV series. Ms. Yang is known in animation circles for her work on shows like Fanboy and Chum Chum, Family Guy, Gravity Falls, Clarence, and Adventure Time. Now she’s brought us the adventures of Yoyotoki (and her friends, “…a fantastically elastic gummy bear named Steak and a sloppy pig named Hotwings…”) as her bid to be the next pilot show that’s picked up for production by Amazon Studios. Pretty Little Dead Things

Furrybones is a skeleton. A playful little skeleton, who likes to dress up in animal costumes. A wide variety of animal costumes, in fact! That’s the story behind Furrybones, a 3D art collection created by the artist Misaki Sawada. In the way of all things, Furrybones have become quite a collectible — and of course there are a few limited edition items in the collection. Recently the artist has also branched out into plush stuffies, jewelry, and a host of other Furrybones merchandise. It’s all at her official web site for you to haunt.

Back in 2014, illustrator Katie Shaw got busy on a life-long dream of creating her own comic, based on the works she loved growing up. The result is Dragon Child, an on-line black and white fantasy comic created, written, and drawn by Katie, that is also available in paper form. Over the past year she’s been appearing at various comic conventions in the western USA to introduce people to her work. What’s the story? When the dragons of the world gather from the four corners to decide what to do about the growing impact of humans, a young girl named Ryu Kodomo discovers that she has caught the attention of an elf named Chase — and a precocious young “dracling” named Embyr. Items including: Life-sized dachshunds and not-life-sized dragons (well, unless your dragons are very small!) in various colors. Including some rather psychedelic-colored leopard prints. “Cosmic Dash is a webcomic with science fiction and space opera influences that updates every Friday. The comic deals with a massive galaxy called the Silver Spiral that is being explored by many different alien races and three principal factions. The comic focuses on Dash Kameku and his crew-mates as they transport cargo around the known galactic territories and beyond.” Got all that? The series is created and illustrated by David A. Davis with the help of Deft Beck (writer) and Tobias Van Den Bergh (inker). The Cosmic Dash web site is kind enough to have an extensive “New Reader Guide” page and archives to help you get caught up.
