Hear the Roar from the Past

With the new ThunderCats series on Cartoon Network doing very well and picking up lots of fans, it seems a good time to take another look at the original series from the 1980’s. That’s the purpose of Hear the Roar: The Unofficial and Unauthorized Guide to Thundercats, available now in softcover from Telos Publishing. Even though it’s “Unofficial and Unauthorized”, editor and lead writer David Chrichton managed to interview numerous people associated with the production of the original series, which began airing in 1985. From the publisher’s release notes: “Featuring over 80 exclusive interviews with cast and crew members, this definitive reference guide charts ThunderCats’ creation and development, drawing on a wealth of never-before-seen production paperwork and leaving no stone unturned.  Dedicated chapters highlight the writing, animating, scoring and recording of ThunderCats, while a comprehensive story guide reviews all 130 episodes, including notes from the scriptwriters themselves! The legendary ThunderCats toy line from LJN Toys is documented too, and even the associated series SilverHawks is explored. ” You can find out more about the book on Amazon.

The Stuff of Legend

Love that title! Here’s part of the description from the publisher, Del Rey: “When a child is taken by the fearsome Boogeyman, his loyal toys (including The General, Max the bear, Percy the pig, and others) must rally to stage a daring rescue operation.” This trade paperback graphic novel was written by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith, and illustrated in black & white by Charles Paul Wilson III. It comes to stores this April.

Cute, Dangerous Toys…

Rocket World is a creative and artistic collective founded in 2001 by Patrick York Ma. We noticed this on their web site: “One of the featured properties at Rocket World is the I.nsurgents W.ilderness G.ruppo.  Conceived in Patrick’s sketch book on a Xmas day flight to London in 2000; the I.W.G. are a feisty and rebellious underground group of self-aware animals who were given sentience by a group of mysterious alien beings.  The I.W.G. have organized and taken up arms to fight against any humans that have killed, exploited their kind and/or polluted their habitats. As the I.W.G. adapt to their new-found intelligence, they often struggle with the same temptations and failings of their enemies. The I.W.G. are cute yet decidedly deadly, and their narrative can be described as Che meets Animal Farm with a dash of pulp science fiction thrown in for good measure.” Goodness. A whole line of I.W.G. toys, t-shirts, prints, and other cool stuff can be found at www.rocketworld.org.
