The Artist Gets Around

One of the artists (one of many!) we ran into at Further Confusion goes by the name of Ishaway Friestad. “I am an visual illustrator, working in a variety of medias, both traditional and digital. I have shown my work at fantasy conventions and a couple of art shows.” She works on a wide variety of colorful products, too! She has an Etsy store for those items she makes entirely herself, and a Redbubble store for other items that she decorates and puts up for sale. And look up her personal web page too, where she displays her latest art projects.

Back from Further Confusion 2016 with a new batch of interesting things to let you know about! First up: AjSHROY is a graphic artist interested in sequential art and illustration (as well as costuming). You can see her works over at her website, zia.li. Meanwhile, her currently active comic is called Birblyfe, which you’ll find over on a web site called ilk.space: “The ilk are a highly advanced bird civilisation whose territory occupies a series of large islands off the Northeastern coast of Tsim-Edien. Collectively, the island cluster is known as Rork. Residents of this region live in relative isolation from the rest of the world. Birblyfe follows the lives of two townbirds, Benjamael Grimroth and Peter Mayden, as their normal routines are disrupted by a strange celebrity of unknown origin.” Lots of character information and sketches to be found there as well.

He Speaks with the Trees

After becoming that much more well-known the world over (thanks to a certain hit live-action movie, we hear), both Rocket Raccoon and Groot (the talking tree) found time to star in their own full-color comic book series from Marvel. What fans wanted though, of course, was for them to team up again and bring more of their own special brand of mayhem to the galaxy. Wishes granted! Now Skottie Young (writer) and Filipe Andrade (illustrator) have returned with a brand new series called (what else?) Rocket Raccoon and Groot.  And this time, Rocket is… an interplanetary crime boss? Say it isn’t so! See what they DO say over at the Marvel Comics web site, where they interview Mr. Young for his perspective on this. [And with that, we’ll see you after Further Confusion!]

A Little Girl in the Woods

The great tradition of wordless comic book storytelling continues with The Only Child, a new black & white graphic novel by Guojing (a concept artist for games and animated TV series). “A little girl—lost and alone—follows a mysterious stag deep into the woods, and, like Alice down the rabbit hole, she finds herself in a strange and wondrous world. But… home and family are very far away. How will she get back there?” Published in hardcover last December by Schwartz & Wade, The Only Child is available now over at Barnes & Noble.

Not Crazy, Just Proud

Most nerdy people out there (you know who you are!) who are also fans of music are familiar with the works of Jonathan Coulton. Well now after a successful Kickstarter campaign, several of Mr. Coulton’s most famous songs have been mashed together into a brand new full-color comic book series, Code Monkey Save World — written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Takeshi Miyazawa. “A put-upon coding monkey teams up with a seething, lovelorn super-villain to fight robots, office worker zombies, and maybe even each other as they struggle to impress the amazing women for whom they fruitlessly long.” It’s available now and you can find out more over at Monkey Brain Comics.

Humans are a Distant Memory…

Published at the tail-end (ha ha ha) of 2015 we have Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard, the first book in a new series by Lawrence M. Schoen. Here’s the official description from the publishers, Tom Doherty Associates: “In a distant future, no remnants of human beings remain, but their successors thrive throughout the galaxy. The Doggie Wants Death

Jayro Lantigua is a well-known underground cartoonist. Now he’s had the chance to rise to the level of not-so-small press (that’s how  Bleeding Cool puts it) as Creature Entertainment has re-printed his Burnt Comix in a larger format. “A Dog chooses to commit suicide and tries to find a creative way to die. Along the way he encounters obstacles which will further nurture his existential crisis. His quest for death will only lead to an encounter with the ‘Dark Master’, which will shake him and the ‘Alley’ to the core. Death, laughs and debauchery, along with parents dumping on kids dreams, are all in this gut-busting issue of Burnt Comix!” The first black & white issue is on the shelves now.

Deer and Wolf, Defenders of Nature

We came across this new full-color comic book series from Chapterhouse called Spirt Leaves, written and illustrated by Rossi Gifford from Scotland. “Freya, an albino deer girl training to be a shaman, sets off to the mystical forest to find out what is causing an imbalance. Along the journey,she meets a wolf boy looking for the same entity, and they agree to find it together. Both are determined to pursue this force and prove they are capable on their own – but how do you stop a demon?” There’s a whole lotta information and preview pictures over at Bleeding Cool. Spirit Leaves #1 is on the shelves now.
