BOOM! Studios snuck two more by us this last summer… First up, the Peanuts: Friends Forever 2016 Special. Here’s what they say: “After five years and 39 issues, four original graphic novels, and a groundbreaking tribute book, we bid farewell to this incarnation of Peanuts comics with an oversized finale. Snoopy’s Daisy Hill Farm is being torn down and Charlie Brown tries to be there for him. It’s a warm goodbye filled with love and heart for all devoted Peanuts readers!” Featuring stories by the late Charles M. Schulz himself, as well as Jason Cooper, with artistic help from Donna Almendrala and Vicki Scott. Also look for the Garfield 2016 Summer Special, a one-shot collection of never-before-seen comic short stories by the likes of Scott Nickel, Mark Evanier, Brittney Williams, Andy Hirsch, Sara Talmadge, and Lissy Marlin.

Poetry and Purring

A Cat Named Haiku is an ongoing full-color comic series written by Mark Poulton, illustrated by Dexter Weeks, and publish by Arcana Studio. Well now they’ve released the first hardcover collection called A Cat Named Haiku: Totally Pawesome Edition. Here’s what they say: “A Cat Named Haiku tells the story of a mischievous little cat, as he learns valuable lessons on love and friendship told completely in haiku. Collecting A Cat Named Haiku volumes 1 and 2, select haikus from the Furrever Friends Anthology, and the all-new Cthulhu Loves Kittens story.” You heard it here. In case you don’t remember: A “haiku” is a Japanese form of poetry that is always 17 syllables long. Read all about it.

Fighting Like…

Space Cats In Space! is the name of a new animated computer game, currently under development. They have a Kickstarter campaign in place to try and finance the next step in the process. “An advanced twin-stick shooter space epic, SpaceCats In Space! Follows the kingdom of Meowfyre’s rebellion against the dogs of the Grolich Empire. Bomber strikes, wingman assistance and RPG-like leveling are all tools at your disposal in the battle to stop Oberluft Kommandant Arnuld Von Schloss and the vast Grolich war machine. Featuring animated cutscenes and full voiceover to immerse you in a World War II inspired space battle of cats versus dogs!” This is not the most “serious-minded” of fighting games out there… if the title wasn’t a giveaway, check out the intro video at the Kickstarter page! (Also this is obviously more for “cat people”!) As we write this there is just over a month left in their current crowd-funding campaign.

Cats, Dragons… and now Mice!

Alan F. Beck is an artist who created a series called The Mousopolitan Museum of Art — “classical portraits by the mice masters”. In other words, world-famous works of art re-imagined as anthropomorphic mice. He has also written a children’s book (available through Create Space) called The Adventures of Nogard and Jackpot, which details what happens when a young kitten hears a noise within the closet and discovers a baby dragon. Both of these (and many other items) are on display at the artist’s web site.

The Game of Cat and Dragon

Sarah Clemens is an all-around artist (being a medical illustrator pays the bills) who has chosen to focus her talents on creating oil paintings that are almost photo-realistic. Not only of friends, family, and landscapes, but also of numerous fantasy topics. If you visit her web site you’ll find a special fantasy gallery — and it doesn’t take long to notice that she has a special affinity for both cats and dragons… often in the same picture! Her two favorite characters — named Magnus and Loki — even have their own special web site. Ms. Clemens displays at art galleries and convention art shows throughout the US, but of course many of her works are also available as prints on her web site.

The Lion Stalks Tonight

Not really anthropomorphic per ce, but certainly a fine specimen of animal art. Magnetic Press have released the latest edition of the European hardcover graphic novel series of wildlife adventures called Love. The latest, Love Volume 3, is about The Lion. New from Retrofit Comics comes Elf Cat In Love, a new hardcover black & white graphic novel by James Kochalka (creator of American Elf and Johnny Boo). “When the incredibly conceited Elf Cat goes on a quest for the Ice Sword with his magical friend Tennis Ball, they will face dragons, magical hot dogs, snowflake princesses, and confront their feelings! A Man, a Bird, and a Cat Walk Into a City…

Sounds like a set-up for a bad joke, we know. In 1978 comic book legend Moebius (artist) and avant-garde cinema legend Alexandro Jodorowsky first collaborated on a black & white comic called Eyes of the Cat. “In a desolate dreamscape world, a man, a bird, and a cat interact in a unique apocalyptic yet poetic fashion… Alexandro Jodorowsky and Moebius, creators of the Sci-Fi classic The Incal, initially teamed up on this 1978 gem, where words and images alternate in mesmerizing fashion.” Now Humanoids (that’s the publisher!) have released a new edition of the original graphic novel, once again printed on yellow paper like the much-sought-after first edition.
