Learning To Walk

Word is out that Cartoon Saloon is readying Mebh and the Pups, a spin-off TV series based on their multiple-award-winning animated fantasy Wolfwalkers. (Winner of the Ursa Major Award for Best Anthropomorphic Motion Picture of 2021, among many others.) “Mebh is a wild, adventurous young girl, a Wolfwalker! This gang of friends explore the forest, make new friends, and help the other animals they share a home with – friendly mice and squirrels, a grumpy badger and more. Full of mischief, Mebh and the Wolf Pups often cause mayhem with their boisterous fun but, when Mebh transforms into a wolf, she connects with nature and her environment allowing her and her pals to solve any problem!” Directed by Jeremy Purcell, the series is set for animation festivals starting in September.

Would You Trust Their Advice…?

From the “How did we let this one slip by us?” file… Probably it’s because the 2025 film The Fox (directed by Dario Russo) is still making its way through the festival circuit, and has yet to find wider distribution. Here’s the description, from an article at Den of Geek: “The Fox follows Nick (Jai Courtney) as he proposes to his girlfriend, Kori (Emily Browning), later finding out she’s having an affair with her boss, Derek (Damon Herriman). While hunting, Nick meets a talking fox (Olivia Colman), who promises to transform his cheating fiancée into the perfect woman; one that is ready for marriage. That same fox manipulates Derek’s wife, Diana (Claudia Doumit), promising to make her cheating husband in love with her once again.” This dark comedy features several talking non-humans, all brought to life through very realistic puppetry. Keep your eyes out, and check out the trailer over at imdb.com — but be warned, there’s a lotta F-bombs in this one!

The Demon and The Daring

Even small fannish conventions can lead to some interesting finds. We visited AnaCon, an annual one-day event sponsored by the Anaheim Central Library in Southern California — and there we came across Dark and Zarus, a new fantasy novel by Lauren Cipollo and Matt Conant. “Dark, a feline wanderer haunted by the fall of her clan, has lost everything: her home, her people, and her place among humankind. Zarus, an exiled demon burdened with forbidden powers, carries the final message of a mysterious order. Each is hunted by the same enemy: The Frayed, an army of psychic undead that has spread across the kingdom like a plague… and drawn to Grasmere, the last stronghold of humanity, where the long-lost phoenix god Reku slumbers. To have any hope against the storm, Dark and Zarus must work together to unlock the ancient mysteries of the phoenix and root out the mysterious force behind the Frayed. But trust is hard to come by, and in a world unraveling under the shadow of the Frayed, a single doubt could doom them all.” Check it out in paperback at Barnes & Noble.

Beauty and the Bear

The story of a young noble who is transformed into a polar bear by wicked magic is one of the most popular fairy tales in Norway. In 2024, Mikkel Sandemose directed The Polar Bear Prince, a 2D animated feature film based on the story. It went on to be a very popular film in Norway. So why are we talking about it now? While the film has been available for a while in Norwegian with English subtitles, now there’s an English dub version making the rounds. “The fearless, curious and adventurous Liv dreams of leaving her home in the village. She only truly feels like herself when exploring in the woods. One day, when she encounters a mysterious white bear, a friendship emerges and a powerful bond begins to form between the pair. Soon, Liv discovers that her new friend was once cursed by a witch.” Distribution is spotty, but there’s talk of it having a theatrical release in North America. We’ll keep you posted. (Fun fact: In 1991 Ola Solum directed The Polar Bear King, a live-action movie based on the same story.)

This Story Should Be Herd

Goat Magic is a “new fairy tale” graphic novel, written and illustrated by cartoonist Kate Wheeler. In the Kingdom of Capeya there lived a goat-herder named Trill. She had a unique, magical ability to communicate with the herd under her care. But she was bored with her life, as what she really wanted was to be a wizard and work some real magic. Also in the Kingdom lived Princess Alya, heir to the throne. What she really wanted was to be anything other than a princess. But then an assassination attempt leaves Alya with a terrible curse: Every sunrise, she transforms into a black goat. Running off to hide in the countryside, Alya discovers that Trill’s magical gift might just be the thing that could break the evil spell. Want to know more? Visit Oni Press and find out!

Found recently at a convention: Can I Pet Your Werewolf is a 2017 collection of black & white short comics, edited by Kel McDonald and Molly Muldoon. “A different take on those who get fluffy under a full moon. This is a collection of goofy, cute, and sweet werewolf stories.” There’s more than a little queer spin on several of the stories here too! Visit Kel’s web site to find out more.

Spawning a Relationship

In the long-standing tradition of dorky guys who wind up with really unusual girlfriends, GKIDS has recently picked up the North American distribution rights for Chao, a new anime feature film directed by Yasuhiro Aoki. Animation World Network describes it like this: “It’s a story of man-meets-fish, fish falls for man, man is forced by his boss to marry fish to strengthen diplomacy with the sea creatures, fish turns out to be a mermaid princess, and boy very slowly and reluctantly falls for the fish mermaid.” Got all that? Good! Make sure to check out the trailer, then look for it in theaters starting this month.

Raccoon of Righteousness

We found a new (to us!) comic series from Dark Horse, one that claims to be “Hellboy meets Redwall“. William of Newbury was created by Michael Avon Oeming, who previously brought us the well-known Mice Templar series. Here’s what Dark Horse says: “Loosely based on real events in 12th century England during what was known as ‘The Anarchy’. A time where the country was beset with plague, civil war, and demons. William of Newbury is a neurotic monk, fearful of the earthly world, but confident and unwavering in the face of true evil. He fights the dead to restore peace, but his brother is intent on stopping him, fearing for his soul. Newbury is dark, yet quaint, deadly yet cute. Follow him as he negotiates with thieves, evades his brother and the church, and battles the undead and evil spirits.” Issues 1 through 4 are now together in a trade paperback.
